a freind has a 75hp "force by mercury marine" and i need to change the water pump because he does not know when it was last changed and it had sucked a lot of mud during last season. I have found the id tag on the right side of the transom mount but the numbers are so badly fadded i cannot read them. Is there another location to find the model/serial numbers?

Re: location of model/serial numbers

I don't think so, but there should be a number stamped on the block up near the #1 cylinder from which Mercury can search their database and tell you the model and year. I know Mercury made some changes in the later years Force but I don't know if they changed the water pump. I know the older forces before 90 used the same pump and impeller on all 3 and 4 cyl engines from 1984. It is highly likely that if you bring in the old impeller and ask for a 90 or later, when you compare them they might be the same. If you have a 2 piece drive shaft, the engine is 90 or later. if you have a 1 piece drive shaft it is pre 90. so then ask for anythig up to 89.

There might be a nickle-sized welch plug on the powerhead (not sure if they did that on Forces) with the serial number stamped in. Or if the motor came with the boat new, model years probably match.

75 hp was made from 1996-1999
The 96-98 models used the same lower unit, also common to the 1991-1995 70 hp.

The 1999 model 75 hp, used a larger lower unit that was used on the 90hp.
