Location of Serial Number

I recently repowered with a Johnson 28 SPL but don't know the exact year of it. I know that it is mid to late 80's. Where is the serial number on this motor? Since the motor has been repainted and I can't find it, I'm afraid that it has been painted over. Is there any other way of detirmining the year of the engine? It would be possible for me to post pictures of it if that would help.

Look on the transom bracket for a painted over sticker or plate. If you find it try cleaning it off with goof-off. Also look for a welch plug on the motor with #'s on it. Post what you find.

Welch plug #- R8554975<br />I can't even find where the serial # is, the guy did such a sloppy job painting the thing.

BTW, how can you find out the model by the serial number and welch plug number?

AJ, that is the serial number. You could call Bombardier customer service. Most likely they can convert it for you.
