I think I am losing it. My dealer gave me a water seperating fuel filter (the one that looks like an oil filter) for my 2002 MerCruiser Alpha 1 3.0 181 motor. Ok, according to my manual, it is suppose to be right behind the oil filter on the left side of my motor but all I see is the actual fuel pump and no fuel fliter??? What am I missing?

Thanks,
Brian

Never saw one on a IL4, follow the fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump .
You`ll see it if you have one but if the fuel line goes to the pump direct, you dont have one

Yes, the fuel line goes directly to the fuel pump then to the carbuerator. Are you saying I don't have a fuel filter? That doesn't seem right.... Is this by design?

Ayuh,.... The 3.0l is an entry level package,... It's a dealer installed Option...

You'll need the filter head,+ then the installation of course...

Btw,... Welcome Aboard...

What, a fuel filter as an option? Your kidding me! I would assume this is standard on all 4-cycle I/O motors. So your telling me this entry level engine is just sucking up raw, potentially dirty and water-lagged fuel? Great!

Nope,.... I didn't say that....

There's a fuel filter In the fuel pump,+ another In the Carb inlet fitting....

The 3.0 has a fuel filter inside the fuel pump. The "canopy" of the fuel pump can be taken off, and there is a filter inside of it. There is also a strainer at the inlet to the carb. You need to unscrew the fuel line from the carb, and the strainer will pop out.

So, your engine DOES have a fuel filter. But, the better, fuel/water separating type is an option. You can pick up a kit for $30 to $50 to add one yourself. It's highly recommended. The filter is much bigger than the one in the fuel pump, and it is very easy to change out. Plus, the water separating feature is nearly a must for boats.

If you follow the rubber hose from the fuel pump back to the fuel tank and do not find something that looks like an oil filter, then your boat does not have the fuel/water separating fuel filter.

They only stop the dirt, not the water

I want to install one of these feul/water separating filters on my 2005 Ebbtide 3.0L. I picked up an Attwood filter system. Should I install in before the fuel pump or after? What is the ideal placement of these things.... body or connected to the engine? Thanks.
