I just changed the impeller on my 1963 Evinrude Fastwin Model # 18302E Serial # E06926 18 H.P.
I all seemed so simple, but, I encountered two problems. 1)After reassembly, I go to pull on the pull starter and it is locked up (was not previously)and, 2) I apparently overtorqued the screw on the upper & lower shift rod connector. On visual, the shift rod is still functioning.......dang newbies....Help please!

Those shift rod connectors are pretty soft. They get stripped out all the time. I believe they're still available from the dealer for not much money. In the mean time, run a longer bolt through it and put a nut on the other side, then just use the other bolt. Do that with the lower unit off unless you like unsolvable puzzles! Flip it over if you need better access.
The bolts don't need to clamp the connector closed, just being there keeps the shift rods together. So go easy tightening them.

While the lower unit is off, see if the driveshaft can be turned. Perhaps one of the impeller vanes got squished, or you have the wrong impeller in there. Got a P/N?

Thanks Paul,
When I took the old impeller out, I visually compared it to the new one, they looked identical. The OEM impeller is 375638 and the kit I have says; "replces OMC 382468, and the kit number is 18-3377 (no makers name, just Taiwan...) I have not taken it back apart but will do so tomorrow.

You might want to use some dishwashing liquid on the impeller, it makes it a tad easier to get it all back together again. The soap will dissolve when you tank/lake test her. ;)

Thanks for the tip!
I just found a new shift rod connector on ebay, for $9 - seems high for such a smaal part but what the heck, this is a 1963 model, I guess I should be happy just to find parts!
