after a long day on the lake with 3 kids and no fish, I decide to call it quits.I pull the boat up on the shore and back the van down into the water ,close the door (with the van still running and the dummy light on) and put the boat on the trailer and go to get in the van only to find that it's locked. Well at this point Im fit to be tied, now i'm locked out of my van it's almost out of fuel and the 3 kids that were so board all day are not so board,in fact their on the ground laughting at me. after debating about putting a rock throught the window I see that one of the back windows is not latched, so I take my fly rod stick it throught the crack in the window and manage to hit the hatch release button (after alot of attempts ) open the doors tell my loveing kids to get in and we have a nice ride home. that was 8 years ago and to this day I roll down my window after I've backed in to the water and if my daughter is with me she still laughts when she sees me roll it down. The things memories are made of.

Re: locked out!!!

This must be a Canadian thing. I too was on my way to the cabin and when I got to my typical parking spot (which is on a flat area that is solid rock but you need to be careful where you drive). To check things out I jumped out of the car as did my buddy. I have this terrible habit of pressing the electric lock as I exit and as the door slammed I realized what I had done and yelled to my buddy to not close his door but it was too late. :0

Now I am 20 miles from anything with my vehicle in the middle of the path (not really a road) and it is running.:%

After many tries I finally realized I was going to have to break a window. One of the rear ones in a F-150 extended cabs. They are small windows and do not roll down so they would be easy to install and how much could they cost................ >o arrrrrgh it was 450 Canadian and I could not find a used one anywhere. I finally went over to Detroit and got a used one from a local guy (who had it shipped from Ohio because he did not have any) for 275 US funds............. boy what a learning experience. I now own a F-150 with the coded numbers on the outside of the door d:)

Re: locked out!!!

yeah, why don't more cars have that keyless entry keypad? My keys are locked securely in the truck while I'm in the boat...they can't fall in the lake from there.

Re: locked out!!!

AAA will send you some one to unlock the door. Also, most sheriff's here have slim jims and they will make an effort. Been there, done that... too many times. I get the family's DA award every year !!

Re: locked out!!!

Roll down the windows BEFORE you back the trailer in.

It will enable you to hear if someone is yelling at you to STOP !!

Re: locked out!!!

at least you werent on a ferry and just making a run to the head, and get back and realize the keys are in the locked truck. cant tell you how much fun it is to be standing next to the only truck pointing the wrong way for that really long 15 minute trip back to where the locksmith vcan meet you!

I ride a lot of ferrys and thats one of my biggest fears is to have a problem. You have never seen road rage like when people are tying to get on and off one.Its like thay go mental thinking there going to miss it or not get off.

Good Idea Roscoe. I have a truck key on my boat key ring. I dropped the truck keys in the lake once.:|
I think I always have 3 truck keys with me when boating now.

Re: locked out!!!

I back down the ramp with the tailgate and all windows open, rain hail or shine. Keep a spare key on the boat keys and hide another spare in a magnetic container under the vehicle. For the family car we have Onstar and it can be opened in seconds with a phone call and a password, however I do not tow the boat with this one unless I have to.

Re: locked out!!!

Wife's new van has teh keypad on the outside, but also has a feature on it that the drivers door unlocks if the keys are in the ignition. I have tested the feature and is the neatest thing I have ever seen. It should come on all new vehicles. Now if only it would work with the keys in the pocket of a jacket on the back seat d:)
