Locked up Lower unit

My buddy has OMC 5.0 the lower unit locked up he cracked the hub trying to pull it out with the puller threaded into the hub .What should he try to remove the hub. Heat can be the only thing but what should he look out for?
Or should he look for a new/rebuilt unit?

An OEM service manual for whatever drive he has would be my first thought.

A lot more detail would be a big plus, include info like what "Hub" and what year and model drive it is.
