I was wondering if I could put a password on "My Documents" so they are locked. So no-one who uses my computer can get into that area.
I know I can lock my whole computer with a password, but I have files and such that some people(who use my computer) just do not need to see.
Is there anyway to do this?

Thanks in advance,
Bro Chris.

I'm not an expert in that area but you might want to buy some software that does this sort of thing. It will probably encrypt your data. You would have to enter a password every time you would want to get into that folder...or something like that depending on the software. Don't know of anything free.

That sounds right, but can it encrypt pictures as well? That is really what I don't want some people to see...the pictures.

But there is no way to do this on my computer now, without buying software?
I thought you could lock out any program of your computer with a password. Hmmmmmm....

What OS are you using? If it is NT/2000/XP and your file system is NTFS (NOT FAT or FAT32) you should be able to right click on folder and go to security settings and only allow you to access them. No way to put a password on it that I know of...just restrict user access.

I'm using ME but it will not let me go to security settings though.

Re: locking "my documents"

Then your disks are set to FAT32...you may be able to convert them (I don't do ME). Right click on the C: drive in My Computer..go to properties and see if it says Fat32. If so, SOMEWHERE under System Tools or Control Panel, you should see a Fat32 Converter (if not you may need to add it with the ADD/REMOVE Applications - Windows Apps (or something like that).

**Not Repsonsible for you PC blowing up or not working - use at your own risk...like I said..I don't do Win ME.***

It is set to FAT32, but can't find the way to change it....yet.
Not in system tools or control panel.

If you're really concerned about keeping files, any file really secure, consider PGP, Pretty Good Privacy. Version 6.58ckt is the last known solid/safe/opensource version.

You can encrypt emails, files, pics etc. One word of caution, DON'T lose/forget the password/passphrase. There's virtually NO way to decrypt a file without it. You can encrypt files/emails to yourself or someone else.

Here's what a file or pic or email might look like when it's encrypted.

-----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE-----
Version: 6.5.8ckt http://www.ipgpp.com/

qANQR1DBw84Duj9GRQ6gGuEQEf9Ie24ZrsV3OfwwKxnNzsKdXovrvG6n3HmqyV7x
uyl9ZaiZ9ixhT59AaoS75WZHJLjLREvrvh2wkg9XgQUCz+l1VjHVxQbapYlkYEfs
WTCpvIkuxnAy/7elkSVFk0XRheb/BNAMnzKZuOPP7GIHAzDqWcg+UKV2dVN7AtF7
MREGM62InsQcqisl+wBvOt/H2evmgB7kA6DwrZmnxgzLfztMuR1NDWT1XfwCRKFd
7z9Gsmq57+crm62P8pYwHgQaWNEuMLb0GdHjp5vJMxLM73c0Iorp1sC+TAfOQMZ3
Hlu+2pJemZHyINEUsKTndVGgi9QXph4GLCuvT0PIrnIJ5SOL71Mjr3X3wSNqm173
/sFLp3whIjIla5QCLi4D8r3qOoz3YfFB97+TiMrXsjqyE14zGRxisEElcGsAJWi/
husQ1e6PYJBxrM1TnmfjukXBZxtsq2gZnxZrsKGT03HKNZtyFizumgDsMCVjL6VT
mT11WzCkPG5oIvR/Ai7xScx0b88bBphisDwF52iaO85oz9Y5BksnNg6TGojPMTMx
+eC6xe6s0kALe97deWMxaTRZekfRx6cUhz/i7TT1Mt2ikzRc6+m/yaK+ifjf2PY7
mq6Nl/h10+oXbCENwtqurXm4dVyAIs0aBRn1xF0gJL8TWcbV6E6Z4MHxl8LnphEg
Fsa7qVwwC5jHm0R9SqD1/PCnyAKEfg8e6tojiFhSdifos1s/khCvE4Gg1pVErISt
CjFMOOr+4CGV/2JT0bi0PWRzjjkR/3Pmrgn6S4tUH45g59JorFeJxU2hTCmGFOA0
C+dTVEfiyyNXQLB6OLH+kQRDfV5nY5fplFuMAPMSDL/BcnpxmU6/9rCuLOs6UnRA
SBFckgIvR8nEv0KoWUZ3VAwKyKyIZFzXOShGTO7s7DQbmsPghMsWKZc4J3U8bSjB
dOZ1JiOC1px27wfskMzWcIIk6yr1wEOoNHfJXTqfYig6VJjNd/2Rsikp2Cew7/eb
DV919hdpBy8db/0Snwvo1obhLPdRv3chfDk37yfc5QpH3ClPdVVL+a4pWGNsC663
kPRd135HK4IgTwFBGP4/UTn7DvU8pmGoH/jEOV7T0WXz+O9BPtgD/wByOduMKsUD
sAmy7SXP0s/a7pB/UtNcXl9g3D3J/CgYr6BJYmyDGLtyho0O3rVWBUtSVyo2nf2E
uihkzMMygjbA3lrVekr7BLmg1rUMsQ78Odo663YXTPuT3Z6++6JwOXuwdYDJg4bX
KN8p6G8omFvuhvXUUNoWhaZsI4Xqt1D1imDBw+XAhT0RTnTgBs2wwcDAHG3INBIn
Y06gpJOytXQSmXHMp3Cl1+j2KGVX2H8ARouc0y4pRPEcIBHFkhOcALgiJ9Kf0d9B
eFnVAZPkA0X9RvdrijkvrEKe29nT9i3XgmeBKW2BxGnRBn18MeF4rdQkp5QGzSI+
plbHqG+TjjP0RrMZeBbaG6OQu3EVXSvOvMrrPY8/D9SSXpvOIlhLpv1vx6G1Frti
S9yPGT4mFIyb1zkj/VnG0k7cenzdOsnAYGHsROSTg5hVuJgE+VLjNOj7Rbb5FUej
Te+Q1bbgbhny1a/SNnPinG4nO4qRqHvAZIsbrCQju8OApjp16V3LYadVW7yPDROt
0amfC+IeS+a1fGkWPpoilAFUOV1lRU9vohDnxx4kFuEOb7jkdjs6JSzqufoTHT9I
OR/By1bWYm2VUqtgC633yWBb/+268qeWRAmx/iw/w68xgmJ/rrq+nFLKthNax3/5
NItYLO2kc0hFnIhfwDLxtWj+wqWClgeO15DaysB/RI9I73NT6OXFMRF0An6ylUan
MgJppA98tiix7DsDgAGzsJKlxMNM8kZUrs7NG36dp25XViMlVqg7u01mER8cLQiT
j5eKPmXOGImtnv0ed1cQsVNWuB3lONqp/A==
=GTn2
-----END PGP MESSAGE-----

Or buy a MAC. It allows you to put any file you want into a "secure vault."

Multiple users on your computer? Each can have a secure vault.

Re: locking "my documents"

Thanks everyone, I wish I had the money to buy a Mac now.
That PGP thingy sounds good and am looking into it.

I was thinking...I guess I can just create a new folder and disguise it with a different name. Drag everything into that. Maybe that will work.

OK, If you're up for a little reading, there are a lot of sites explaining the in's and out's of PGP. It may look formidable at first, but it's really not hard to install and use.

Start here for the program.
PGP Builds

Try the 5th one up from the bottom of the list (pgp658ckt08.zip)

Lots of info here:
PGP Info...

Thanks...and your right about lots of reading Xcusme.
The "Lock and Hide" is what I was looking for, but was hoping not to have to pay for it.
I'm going to try to understand the PGP first and if that does not work, I will try the Lock and Hide.

Thanks guys.

Yes that should be easy enough you could hide it and rename it.
So where should we hide it... :D .....

Re: locking "my documents"

I've been using a free program called "Folder Access" for a few months and it has worked well for me on XP Pro. You just right click on a folder and click LOCK FOLDER. It then asks you for a password (the one you used when you installed the program) and locks the folder. Reverse the procedure to unlock it again.
