Locking Up a Dinghy and Motor...

I have a '99 Quicksilver with an '86 Evinrude Junior... clearly not on the top of someone's "Let's steal this!" list, but I'd like to know what options I have for security.

I'd love to leave the dink with the outboard attached and locked somehow, and I'd like to know what options I have to secure the dink itself while at dock.

I'd also hate to visit another place only to find it gone, and no way back to my boat.

....thanks

Re: Locking Up a Dinghy and Motor...

on my motor, the toggles to tighten the clams to the transom have holes drilled in the ends, and are spaced close enough that when tight, a regular paddlock will fit through both toggles, preventing them from being unscrewed.
others have bolted their motors to the transom with stainless bolts through the transom. you can have the best security sustem, but if someone wants it bad enough, they will gety it. any way you can make it dificult for someone so they move onto easier pickings works.

Re: Locking Up a Dinghy and Motor...

at the dock I use a plastic covered security cable I bought at home depot for ~$30. It is approx 6' long and 3/4" thick. I think the brand is master lock. I loop this through the handle on the OB that is locked to the transom. The other end I lock to a cleat on the dock. I have done this for years with all my boats.

I also use one of these long cables to lock-up my generator and other items in the back of my truck when we go camping. I loop the cable around the generator and bikes, outboard etc and then lock it to my trailer hitch. This way we can stop somewhere to see the sights with some measure of security.

Perfect? no, but will slow someone down long enough to possibly make them rob someone else. These cables are very tough to cut with bolt cutters. As mentioned nothing is secure best you can do is keep the honest man honest. Lets face it if they really want it they will get it.

Option 2 is a sleeping bag for you at night and a 12ga. :D

I use the same thing. I hope it continues to work.
