long and short shaft question

I bought a 22' walkaround without a motor. I had a 150hp Mercury that I put on it. I now see the prop is almost even with the bottom of the boat. Can I use this motor with a bracket of some sort or do I need a long shaft motor? What happens if I run it the way it is?
Thanks!

It won't run properly nor cool the way it is.
You need an extension kit. Can't say more without knowing what year we are talking about.

You need to measure the transom and motor. You probably have a longshaft (20") motor, since the only 150HP motors with shortshaft were rare inline six 1500SS motors, from the 70s. Your boat likely needs a extra longshaft (25")

Re: long and short shaft question

I did mount my motor on the boat and take it for a ride. I have a 1988 150 Merc Black Max with a 20' shaft. I do need a 25"shaft for it to be right but I had to try it.
It did run well and pump water just fine. It was clear from the start I needed the prop lower. The steering was very lazy. It power the boat forward at low speeds fine. Reverse steering was weak, pretty much impossible. High speed forward was lots of engine rpm but no go. I guess I will be looking to drop my prop the extra 5" and make this a nice ride!
