long or short shaft?

what is the determining factor wether you need a short shaft or long shaft?we have a chance to get a 9.9 hp motor but its a long shaft. i dont know what make it is and supposedly it ran when it was put away. i think we can get it for little to nothing but i dontknow if i want to hassle with it if we cant use it.

Measure the vertical distance from the top of your transom to level with the bottom of your hull.

A boat that needs a short shaft will measure 15" + or - an inch or two.

A boat that needs a long shaft will measure 20" + or - and inch or two.
