Long shaft on a 15" transom or a conversion

Hello, I'd like the opinion of some of the experts on this site concerning the following. I own a 14' Jon boat, with a 15" transom. I have an opportunity to buy a practically new out board (Honda 15 HP), but it is a 20" or long shaft. Can I replace the lower unit to make it a 15" shaft? If so, how costly would that be? Do I have any other options, or should I just forget it, and look for something with a 15" shaft. Thanks again, looking forward to some replies here.

It can be done.

At the minimum, the lower unit will need to be dismantled to install a new drive shaft. You will also need different cooling tubes and shift shaft pieces.

Can't help on the cost.

You could also get an outboard bracket or jackplate. Something like thisJackplate

On a 14' jonboat, with a "heavy" motor, I'd look for one with minimal setback for balance purposes.

I just noticed there's no picture on the link I posted. If you do a search on I-boats for "outboard bracket", you'll get lots of hits.

Mariner1 - I been running a 1975 long shaft 9.9 Johnny on a 12' alumnium skiff with a 15" transom for years with no problems. I would not run a short shaft on a 20" transom though.
