I have a 12' Klamanth Aluminum boat, what would be better to use a 7.5 honda short shaft or a 10 honda long shaft? It is 20" from top of motor mount area to bottom of boat.

Re: long shaft or short shaft

I think your boat will need a long shaft after researching the subject.

Now the boat I have measures 17" from the area the outboard sets on to the bottom of the hull. The motor currently on the boat is a short shaft. Would a longshaft work better for this application? I am looking for another engine with a little more power but I really don't know if I should be looking for a short shaft or a long shaft.

A 20" transom requires a longshaft.

A 17" transom is a shortshaft.

Re: long shaft or short shaft

So I got mixed answers on this.

From everything I have read... short shaft outboards are 15" and long shaft outboards are 20". The cavitation plate should be right at the bottom of the boat. I'm either 2" high (if I use the short shaft) or 3" low (if I use the long shaft).

Anyone else want to chime in on this. The boat is a 13' 1968 Salem Skiff (Boston Whaler wanna be).
