I have put my 25 long shaft on a short transom boat, and by the looks of things my engine is way to deep in the water, , I plan on making a transom bracket to raise the engine, so my question is what is the optimal depth the lower unit should be in the water? To my knowledge the prop and a my be a few more inches should be beneath the bottom of the boat. Thanks ,,, by the way it s a 1970 ....25 Evinrude

The flat cavitation plate above the prop should be within an inch of the bottom of the hull.

Also, usually the long shafts can be converted back to a short shaft by removing the extension. But you will need other parts also.

Unless you plan to also use the motor on another boat, by all means just shorten the motor. It's an easy job. You will need to replace the drive shaft. The other parts can be cut off.

The driveshaft can also be cut and balanced but it needs to be done at a machine shop.
