Long Term Motor Storage - JB?

Hi all: I'm thinking of long term storing a 1982 fiberglass boat with '92 Merc six cylinder outboard. Other than the obvious thorough fogging, lower unit drain/refill, carefully covering the boat, etc. what am I missing? I'm looking at storing this thing possibly for many years. I'm finally gonna take JB's advice and get a new Glastron with a Johnson/Suz 70 four stroke. Thanks. gt

Hi, Gary.

You have planned the things I would do, with the possible exception of shrink-wrapping the boat and putting it under a roof of some sort.

Good luck. :)

pull the cowling off and give the block a good coat of corrosion inhibitor, don't forget to pull the prop off, grease the prop shaft, and maybe put a plastic bag around the bottom of the lower :)

If you got a built fuel tank I'd be draining it if you plan on over a year storage.

Plus I'd blow the speedometer tube clear of water, lube all the cables, remove the steering arm from tube (and lube it), cover all the hoses and cables with something to keep the critters from chewing on them, wax the entire outboard's exterior, squirt a little silicone spray on the trim/tilt ram rods and store with them down (not exposed), maybe stuff a rag in the intake where critters can build nests, and spray the heck out of the engine parts with silicone. :)
