To go along with my other post, I am going to be looking at a 1977 40 hp Johnson tonight for a future project. Once I get it home I'll be putting it on a stand and it could be up to 2 years before this motor makes its way back to the water. Do you guys have any suggestions on what to do to the engine for this duration of storage??

Give it a run on muffs or in a tank if its been in salt water also wash and dry it externally. Use fogging oil to ensure the engine internals are well lubricated. Seafoam or similar in the fuel for the final run perhaps.

Drain the carb bowl and fuel pump/filter

Drain and refill the LU.

Grease all the greasing points and oil other moving bits and pieces.

A spray over with WD 40 might not go amiss.

Try to stop critters nesting in it.

Follow the instructions for "Awakening a sleeping outboard" on the Engine FAQ board when you take it out of hibernation.

I usually find "If you don't use it, you lose it"
