Long -v-Short

Ok On my last post I told everyone that my amplifiers on both motors are shot, So I will not be repairing them. New Question, I am eyeing another motor from a friend. He will take it out on trade for some computer work.<br /><br />Its a Johnson and it runs he thinks its a 1975?? Model Number 115ESL74B. He said its a long shaft? How long is that? My old motor was a 68 Evinrude 65 hp model number 65853 and I think it was a short shaft? Was it??? <br />If I get this motor will I need to raise my transome and if so how much longer is it compared to my old motor?<br /><br />Also can anyone tell me anything about the Johnson 115ESL74b? What kind of system is it? Spec and stuff?<br /><br />Thanks for all the help before, I am bumed that I could not get them going!!<br /><br />Thanks,

Measure the engine from the transom clamp ( where the motor sets on the boat) to the top of the cavitation plate and that will tell you which shaft you have. To tell which one you need measure from the top of the transome to the bottom of the hull. Usually they measure like this: 15"= Short shaft 20"= long shaft 25"= Extra long shaft. More than likely your engine is a long shaft. Also that motor you are looking where known for thier durability. Very good engines.
