Having owned several tin boats I have decided to step up to a fiberglass bay/inshore boat for fishing the mighty Savannah river for stripers and making some trips to the intercoastal down around Savannah Ga. I am green when it comes fiberglass boats so I am looking for advice on what to watch for, I am looking only at newer boats but am still wary. Here is one that has my attention I am going to look at Sat take a look and tell me your thoughts they are asking 11k for it.

looks OK . . . make sure the engine performs well . . . will you be able to give it a lake trial before you buy it?

I have a similar boat--it's good for protected water and great for shallow flats, but will be very wet in open water. It has low freeboard. It will be plenty fast with the 90 on it.

Yes the dealer said he highly encourages it on every sale.

Home cooking that describes the waters I fish exactly it will spend 90% of its time with me in freshwater rivers with a trip to the coast 3-5x a year and only in excellent conditions. What kind of draft am I looking at with this boat?

Mako's are good boats and the 4 stroke motors are also good. This Mako looks very clean and so does the trailer. I would start my buyers sales pitch at $9,000 and go for whatever you feel is a fair price. Good luck and if you get it, enjoy the fishing where ever you go.

looks like a sweet boat to me! Great all around boat, great for coastal flats, rivers and lakes......only one question remains...does it hold beer very well? :)

I heard a rumor that some of the mercury 4 strokes were having water issues in the oil,not sure how or why.One owner I spoke with said he changed the oil very frequently to avoid any further issues.

Looks pretty clean.

I like the way the dealer took that many pictures of the package for the ad. Don't see that much out here.

Did you notice the capacity plate of 4 persons or 600 pounds? Unless you are taking a kid or two, 600 pounds may well be reached before the 4th full person gets on board. But should have room for you and two others with gear.

Different dealers have different ways of doing a "sea trial" so understand what their policy is. Meaning out here with many dealers and that size of boat, you don't get a trial ahead of time. You buy the boat then take it for a spin.

Regarding price: if the boat really checks out good, dealer seems to be stand-up and will take care of you and someone you may be going back to for service or selling/buying another boat, I'm not one to recommend trying to low-ball them to try and save a few bucks initially. Maybe there's some other small accessories you might want and see if they'll throw those in instead of lowering the price.

So I'm setup for Saturday morning at 9 for a test ride is there any thing I should specifically look for to do to prove it out?

That hull design will pound in rough water.

Assuming it's like mine:
it's not too bad, but I typically trim my bow up for spray deflection when it's rough. You just can't run fast when it's rough. it's comfortable for 2 guys fishing, 2 adults and 4 small children, 4 teens. I guess it floats in about 6-8", runs on a plane in 12", slow in 24". Never really measured.
But mine has a 70 2 stroke, probably a lot lighter, plus a 20 gallon belly tank mostly toward the bow.

x2. Even the compression numbers and the RPMs read-out. Not something you'll see often on that price range. If, on top of that, he recommend a pre-purchase water trial, it sure look like a fair dealer.

I'd ask him if you can get in touch with the previous owner if you choose to buy it. Always helpful if you have a specific question about something that have been fixed, a particular technique or simply to ask his opinion...

Re: Look like a good deal?

Just wanted to update I went and checked it out and ended up getting it I will take delivery on it tomorrow. It had a pair of chips in the gel coat that they are fixing before they deliver it to me. The merc runs like a top and seems to have plenty of power for the boat.
