Looking at a 1964 18ft Holiday

Hello all.....Pat Adams from Oak Harbor, WA. here. This is my first post and I thought I would introduce myself. I'm retired Navy as of 2009 and I am currently looking at a 64 Holiday that another fellow Navy retiree owned until his passing. He has it set up for fishing but I see soooo much potential in returning it to a more stock look. It has a Homelite 55 by Fisher-Pierce and an Merc 7.5 kicker. It also comes with new bucket back-to-backs in boxes and a mid 90's galvanized trailer. I have never owned a craft bigger than 8 ft before and would greatly appreciate all and any opinions.....her asking price is $900. Thanks in advance!

The P.O. definitely used her in the Puget Sound for shrimping and fishing....even mounted a 3.5 horse Briggs & Stratten pot puller on her! Other than ugly flaking paint, it looks to be in pretty good shape. He made the fiberglass cap himself, but I'm not sure I would keep it on there

I say go for it if damage is minimal...keep your buddy's legacy goin'! :thumb:

As WM eluded to, check for corrosion...unfortunately it hides in areas that you can't see unless it's very severe...i.e. eaten completely through the hull skin. Crawl under the splashwell with a flashlight and check for a cracked knee-brace & check the bilge area for deep pitting. Grab the outboard and pull-it towards you watching the transom...if it nudges even a hair, it probably needs replaced. another telltail sign of a bad transom, is a cracked splashwell

I think the fiberglass cap is really cool (minus the exposed framing lumber); He converted the Holiday into a Chieftain + Islander + Holiday = Chief-land-ay :thumb: It would make a great template for making a new one out of aluminum & rivets :madgrin:

Is the Homelite a 4 stroke? If it runs, you could be able to finance the rebuild and another motor. It's a rarity.

Huh....it is a 4 stroke......That's interesting. I'll have access to 3 extra parts motors (All Homelite 55 4 strokes) It ran great when the Gentleman last parked it...I hope to test fire it on Friday or Saturday
