Hi All,

I hope you all will continue to provide feedback. I have posted on several boats I was very interested in and for one reason or another, the boat/deal went bad.

Here I go again. I am looking at an older boat, a 1987 21 footer with the 4.3/OMC setup. My first take is that the boat is rather large for this motor, however the boat itself is what I am looking for.

I have owned a 3.0 Mercruiser on a 17 ft. bowrider and it was fine, nothing special. I am thinking the same performance on a 21 ft boat with a v6 will be the same....Ok with this.

I never owned an OMC, so, let me know what your thoughts are. Keep in mind, if price was no object, OMC would not be my first choice, although I think the late models (early 90's) were Volvo Penta's or vice/versa.

So, here are the questions I have:

1. 1987 OMC's, what do I look for or do I walk?
2. Would you hesitate to go with a V6 on a 21ft. cuddy? In my mind, if the boat is right, run it and upgrade when she dies to a v8, however I am not sure its an option on these older outdrives.
3. Allot can go wrong with a driveline like this being 24 years old, outside of the basic tests, are there any area's I can look at to see if I am buying a boat that is currently running vs one that I can get 3 years and another 150 hours out of?

The boat has a meter, its at around 250hrs. History sounds right for the hours, however I know age will be my issue with the drivetrain.

Thanks for any advice you may have to offer.

Best,

Mike

Boat is underpowered and has a drive you can't get parts for. I say keep looking. ;)

Yes. And while we're "suggesting" what you look for, avoid boats that have OMC, 470, and 3.7L engine anywhere in the description.

Cheers,
