I'm looking at a 1988 Chaparral 224 with a 200hp Johnson Outboard.

The Good: The hull is in great shape, has sonar, radar, fishfinder, new hydrolic steering, generator, bilge pump, throttle control, mostly rewired.

The Bad? It needs a new tilt motor and the compression on the motor straight across all six cylinders is 60psi. However, it has been stored inside for two years and started right up.

Does anyone have experience with this boat or have opinions about this motor? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

I'd question the compression gauge you used to measure the compression with. If they're all the same and the engine runs OK, I don't think the actual compression is 60 on all cylinders.

I'd try again, but with a different gauge.

I tested this engine again with a different compression tester, came out 75-80 psi for all cylinders. I did this without warming up and running the engine first. Do I need to run it to operating temperature before testing?
