I'm going to look at a 20' pontoon tomarrow for a good price and it has a 28hp Johnson on the back that looks to be a mid 80's color combo. The boat is a 87'. I was wondering what engine this oddball 28hp is based off of, what the compression should be, and any know issues to look out for. The owner said it hasn't been run for a few years but he is putting the boat in the lake so I can float test it. For the price it really doesn't matter if it runs or not.

Same as the 20-35 hp motors of its vintage. No thru-hub exhaust. That motor came to life in 1962 and (I believe) ended in the late 1990's.

I bought the boat and the motor (its a 87') runs great with good even compression between the cylinders. I noticed a sticker that said 100:1 ratio but If I remember right they later changed the recommendation back to 50:1 correct?

put a new impeller in it. you are correct 50:1, there was a service directive. to remove the 100:1 sticker. they are great motors, and easy to service.
