Hey there folks

I was just wondering what anyone had to say (good or bad) about a 1987 50hp Johnson, long shaft, w/ controls, elec start, no power trim or tilt. The oil injection has been disconnected and runs pre-mix.

I found one I'm looking at buying for $1200 canadian. I thought it was a pretty good deal. What do you guys think. Anything in particular I should watch out for?

HAZ

Hey Haz..welcome to the forums....

If ya' like it, OK. But....take it to a wrench for a check over. It's a smart thing to do. Or, if the present owner has had it in recently for tuneup or what ever, ask to see the paper work. May give you a clue to any potential problem. I have an 85' 50hp Johnny. Wouldn't trade it for nothin'. A TNT unit would be nice.

Thanks...keep posting.

johnson's & evinrudes of those years were very good motors. if it runs good you'll be getting a good motor at a good price. good luck with it!

Thanks for the welcome and the replies, they are much appreciated.

I'm going to check it out tomorrow so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll seem ok.

Any words of wisdom on the oil injection system that was disconnected? The rumour I heard was that they weren't very reliable-that's why this owner went with the pre-mix.

Hopefully I come home with a motor tomorrow and with any luck I won't be back on forum hitting you guys up for advice on how to fix it.

haz

Haz....the original VRO pumps were at best, lousy. If you condider installation of a new one, you will need it installed by a reliaable wrench that will see to it that all the alarms will work.

If, however, you wish to run with the oil disconnected and run pre mix, this is perfectly acceptable.

Don't be afraid to jump in here with any questions. That's what the forums are for.

Good Luck!

haz, the most important thing to do is a compression check. Compression should be around 130 to 150 lb [pd] at your altitude. Open the throttle full when you do it with both plugs out grounded to the block, to avoid damage to the ignition. I find it best to do this check after the motor has been run and then shut off for 10 to 15 minutes. Just my way of doing it. A running temperature of the block is more indicative than a cold block. Any questions , just ask. nevjb
