Looking at buying a used Mercury 4 HP

I'm wanting to replace the B&S 5 HP (it came with the boat and it's too loud) for trolling on a 21' fiberglass boat.

I don't know what year it is but it appears to be fairly new, there are no scratches or nicks on the prop. The shift lever is broke off and it's in gear, they said it fell over after they got it in. I can feel good compression while pulling the rope and the prop is turning.

It's at a local pawn shop for $275 (no returns or refunds) and I am unable to test start it etc so I'm wondering if someone has any tips on what to look out for.

Here is a pic I found on the net of the motor:

thx

Take a look at it to make sure that there is nothing missing. From what you have said and the pic it looks like it could be a good deal.

Dunno, but seems to me you might want to insist on starting it before buying it? Tell'm you'll bring your own pail, gas and sawhorse. I could never buy a used motor 'as is' w/out starting it first, unless I'm aware it's for parts only.

I decided to pass on that motor, their no-refund policy and overall attitude just rubbed me the wrong way.

Who knows it could be a stolen item(broken lever falling off the boat) sold by a shady pawn shop??
