Hey,
Im going to look at a 1991 Johnson 150 VRO. The really doesn't want to run it so i should do a compression check, he also told me that the Vro IS still connected. what else should i check for?

Re: Looking Check

hello
let me make sure I understand this. you wish to buy a 13 year old motor cause the guy says it runs better than a new one and serves breakfast on saturdays and with a little adjustment will wash dishes on sundays?
but he doesnt want to show you?
offer him scrap iron prices that way you wont lose very much.
a compression test is good. a leakdown test is better. check the gear oil and drain screw magnets, look closely at the motor and clamps and wiring. if if looks old and knarly the motor has probably had little or no professional maint. but like I said if you cannot see it run at WOT at full load on the water a test wheel or at least a dyno I would offer scrap prices and make him remove and deliver it.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Looking Check

ask when waterpump was last replaced.....check L/U gear fluid for water, look at paint on top of cyl. heads for heat indication (over-heat).
Look at flywheel teeth and bendix gear teeth...sometimes you can tell if theres been a running issue right there...

EDIT: sorry Rodbolt, we must have been typing at the same time... :)

Re: Looking Check

hello
another good indicator of overheat is look carefully where the ignition coils mount. severe overheats will melt the coils. I get at least 2 motors a year that the customer will swear on a stack of momma's pancakes it aint never got hot. then I point out the melted coils and the story will go, well maybe once but I only got it hot once so it cant be blown up. if this guy doesnt want to take it for a sea trial I would keep looking. I dont know how familiar you are but I work on the buggers 7 days a week. I am self employed and I work for 2 marinas so there is not much spare time. what I can tell you is they are incredibly expensive. trim motor for example. 150 or so for a new one over 200 at the bomb dealer. break a screw or three taking the unit out and the labor just went to 5-7 hours at 65-80 an hour. and all we did was a trim motor. so if you cannot fully check this motor out go to the next one. remeber, in boat motors there aint NO such thing as a good deal. the albermarle I posted about that came up thrusday. I just estimated 1800 dollars worth of repairs to bring it back to compliance with USCG fuel and electrical, all do to incompetent work. the guy has no recourse because he bought it from an idividual with no marine survey. the previous owner says it ran well. the port outdrive wont shift into reverse now so that will be more money.
see a pattern here ?
good luck and keep posting

Re: Looking Check

Certainly NONE of our business, but what is the asking price? Seems prudent to put it on the ol raised tailgate and hook up the water ears. If you get to turn the thing over to check compression, the next step is a short one, no?

Re: Looking Check

If it is the 60 degree 150 that was introduced in 1991, the flywheel and starter drive are hidden.

Hire a QUALIFIED tech to check it over for you. Some early 60 degree models had water intrusion problems into #1 cylinder and also motor mount movement that usually can be seen from the forward splash guard leaving marks on the transom where it hit when accelerating.
