I am looking for a medium to large sized dog that likes to swim and boat. I know of the obvious two, labs and goldens, are there any others out there that I should consider? Maybe one that doesn't like to eat furniture? Thanks for any help!

Re: Looking for a dog...

A labrador retriever is too good of a dog to try something else. I have about 25 years experience with beagles, bluetick coonhounds, labs, and german shorthairs, going back to about 10yrs. of age when I was learning from my dad how to train dogs. There is a lot better chance of getting a nice dog vs. a "dud" by going with a lab. retriever. You won't regret getting one. Any dog worth feeding is going to plague you until he's a couple of years old. But a lab is really easy to train and fun to have around even when young. I've had a lab consistently sitting, heeling, staying, and coming when called with 3 days training at 7 weeks old. That's with never saying an unkind word to the pup and only about 20 or 30 minutes of training a day. Lots of quality time with the pup, though.
Get a lab!:)

American Eskimo...........just my biased opinion. Actually....I don't know if mine can swim. Anyway my neighbors have Springer Spaniels and they love the water ! All summer long I can see them swimming in the cove for hours, they are VERY well behaved and she said they are easy to train.

Don't get a collie, they sink.

Had lots of shepherds, love to swim. How about saving a dog from a shelter?

Find a nice shepherd/lab cross.

After years of dogs I would only have a fspayed female.

At any rate, you don't pick the dog, the dog picks you

Yellow lab or any lab for that matter, period. Awesome dogs, love your companionship and want to please. Plus love to swim, and most of all just want to be around their pack(you)

I have a Black lab currently, and shes as much a part of the family as my brother is.

beagle-basset mix. but the are stubborn, require training early, they are very attentive, and need fun and stimulation. remember they are hunters, but very dedicated. some siberian huskies, like the water, but again head strong, unlessed trained. Tasha loves her boats, and will swim with me. drawback, huskies shed twice a year. you have to love dog hair on the floor, but it is worth it for her loyalty.

Our two golden retrievers love the water (and the boat), but watch out for fur. They shed! Next to wife and dogs, my best friend is our Miele vacuum cleaner! LOL

I've always had goldens, and they are wonderful dogs. (and they do shed)

A word to the wise, however. If you get one, go to a reputable kennel with lineage and get it checked out by a vet. They have been known to have been cranked out by unscrupulous breeders in puppy farms, and can be a huge problem.

You might consider a mixed breed. Mine is a Golden Doodle (Golden Retriever/Poodle). They also come in Labra Doodle. Nice thing about these dogs is they don't shed and are hypo-allergenic.

Merlin thinks the whole world is a playground and everyone is his friend. He's great in the car or on the boat.

We got a shelter dog. Born in the shelter and we got him @ 10 wks. His mother appeared to be an Austrailan Shepard and from his other features (paws, etc) his dad was likely a Lab. $135 bucks and he had already been micro-chipped, neutered, had his shots, etc.
He's smarter than any of our Grandkids too;) Name is Jake the wonder Dog! He's 5 months now & growing:D

Re: Looking for a dog...

We wanted a dog for the boat. One that would swim and play with the grandkids. We ended up rescuing a lab newfie mix. He turned out to be a very large dog and does not like the water. Who would have thunk that one :D We sorta think now that is a good thing now. If he would jump in the water while out away from shore or the docks, we would never be able to lift a very large heavy wet dog into the boat :D

Re: Looking for a dog...

Our black lab loves the water. Super loyal and fun dog.

Our Husky, well we got him from the pound, and he's afraid of two things: water and fire...pretty sure he was abused by those methods. He is a very loving dog, but he "dances to his own tune" so to speak. Again probably because of his previous owner. We had a Malamute years ago that didn't mind taking a dip.

Probably my fav water dog was my Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Jake was special, and always will be. Friendliest, most fun dog I ever had.

And Tash, my husky molts twice a year, but he SHEDS 24x7, lol. Hairy bugger!

That is way to cute.

Poodles are good water dogs. I think the standard poodle were bread just for that reason.

Re: Looking for a dog...

We have 4 dogs. A basset hound
A Scottie
A poodle/maltese mix,
And a collie (full size).

ALL of the dogs get into the water ONLY with a life jacket !!!!! The collie is the most reluctant to get wet, the basset would sink.

"IF" I was looking for a water dog, I'd probably consider a lab.
