After getting lost a couple times out on Hartwell, I think a GPS might be in order. :D

I'm looking for an "all in one" unit that meets the following specs:

Color screen - bigger the better.
Loadable with accurate map of Lake Hartwell S.C.
Depth finder
Fish finder
GPS speedometer function

And lastly - I'd like it to have been on the market long enough to have a reasonable chance of finding one used on Ebay. I usually have more money in my Paypal account than my checkbook. :D

Thanks,

-W

I don't know if Mapsource's Fishing Hotspots CD covers Lake Hartwell, Clams, but all your other specs suggest a Garmin 188C for a modest budget or a 2030C with the sonar accessory for "cost no object" budget.

Details at Garmin's website.

Good luck. :)

Thanks JB, and while your here I have another "electronic" question:

How do I upload an avatar to my profile? Is there a byte restriction? Mine keeps failing to take.

-W

It is a mystery to me, Clams. I tried for weeks without success.

A5 finally intervened and did it for me.

Check DC and Non-boating Tech for threads on the topic.

SBN seems to have figured it out.

Good luck. :)

65 x 65 pixels is the ballpark rule of thumb for an avatar. FWIW, JB's is 75 x 75 pixels (1902 bytes), mine is 80 x 39 pixels (1399 bytes).

The gold medal goes to Mellowyellow, 260 x 77 pixels (6368 bytes).

The silver medal would have to go to 'Nat in AR', 150 x 113 (4147 bytes).

Aldo

Re: Looking for a GPS - specs.

Hey there Clams! Good to see someone from my neck of the woods here. And I can attest to getting lost on Hartwell. Have had that happen many times. Not very fun at night especially going up to seneca from portman at night. I bought a Lowrance LCX-15mt and have most of the lakes in the are on it though Hrtwell is one of the lakes I don't have depth contours for. But the shoreline is there. And with Hartwell being up right now you don't have to worry about submerged islands poking up. Plus I have all the bouys marked where I go so I don't run into them at night though a spotlight helps a lot.

Anyway it's good to see someone close here. Do you striper fish?

Was on Hartwell a couple of weeks ago. Beautiful lake, and I well understand getting lost there.

I don't have my GPS yet and had to keep a sharp eye out for channel markers and compare to my map. Found it to be a great test for my son and I on our map reading/channel marking finding skills.

Let us know what you settle on.

Any hand held will keep you from getting lost, lots of them are inexpensive.

If you demand color, a large screen, and a fish finder built in your best bet would be the Garmin 2006C, which can be had at great discounts these days (Garmin had released a successor model line driving down the price on the earlier models), and then simply add Garmin's black box fish finder to it. New one are available on E-Bay all the time and of course if you really want to save some money go with a used one.

Thom

I have a 182 c from Garmin with the sounder module. It work great and they come with color and black and white displays.
