OK pros, I'm looking for some help. A few weeks ago, I wrote a post concerning a 2001 Merc 75hp that was listed for 900 dollars. I'm in the middle of this deal right now and the seller has agreed to use an escrow service. The engine is listed on boattraderonline.com. I'm asking a few of you engine educated members if they could take a look at the sellers ad and if you have any input into that particular motor, I'd greatly appreciate it. Just search under engines/Mercury 75hp 900 dollars. I really want this engine, but want some input from some of the esteemed members here. Thank you gentlemen.

2001??
Looks a lot older than that.
75hp serial numbers D000750 - D081999 1991

The ad never says the engine runs.
Nor does it list and compression readings.

Does $900 seems an unreasonable low price?

Yes it does seem unreasonably low. I think I ought to just keep those 9 hundred dollar bills in my pocket and just keep saving for that larger boat I want next year. I'm going to e-mail the seller that I'm out so if anyone else is interested, go for it, but be careful. Thanks gentlemen for the assistance.

Ask yourself if this was an add for a shiny black 2001 Honda Civic and it was listed for say $1900 would you buy it without a test drive? My advice is to run away.

I would say that the motor is probably worth the $900. It can't be a 2001 though, the shroud looks like it was made in the mid to late 80s, but I could be wrong. It has to be a misprint on the add, but the motor itself is still worth the money if it runs as good as it looks.

I emailed the seller about that motor about a month ago, but when he said it's no longer on a boat I decided against it. The motor looks real nice, but without a test drive its hard to tell if it really is worth it.

Good Luck!
