All,
I have a 1990 24 foot Sun Tracker Party Barge that is in need of a trailer (new or used).

Been watching craigslist (6 months) for a while and the little of what I have found so far I am better of buying new (~$1550-$1795). Might have one for $1450...going to check on this tonight(Somebody decided not to buy their trailer with their new boat at the last minute).

I have seen there are two main types of trailers out there for pontoons. Crank ups and Float ons.

I live within 1-7 miles of where the boat will be either docked or put in at. (Live next to a major river emptying into Lake Erie)

So everyone tells me both kinds will suit my purpose.

So I guess I am first looking for anyone that has a decent price on a used/new trailer.

Second I guess I am looking for some guidance on the trailer purchase itself. Is there one trailer really better then the other? Advantages/Disadvantages of each etc.

Thanks
Chris

Well you cant buy or sell here, except for one section for that. But we can give you a bit of guidance on trailers.

Their two types in common use, a scissor style, thats a narrow one that sits under the cross members with the wheels inside of the toons, its main function is to be very low and is often used around a boat yard to move them and sit them on the ground or on shallow angle launch ramps. its main draw back is because of the marrow wheels it is know to be unstable on a slow sharp turn. but once on the road its fine.

A bunk style, that's the most common the boat sits on bunks and it is very stable to tow or turn. Its draw back is because the toons ride over top of the wheels it takes a bit more water to launch but most ramps are fine. If you just want to haul it out and work on it ask around where its slipped or look on CL and local trade and sell papers. NEW trailers arnt that bad on price I looked at them 3 years ago and a 20 to 24 was 2200.00

I have owned both and it really boils down to how far your going to tow and how you use it. A lot of people who own scissor trailers will often contract out to haul other peoples boat in and out.
I suspect that you have bought a slip kept boat for some reason thats common with pontoons and it makes trailers a bit harder to find.

Thanks for the tips on the trailer!

I am being told the scissor type can be slightly less then the float on (seems opposite of intuition). From the sound of things that may be the one I get.... as currently the Pontoon is in my side yard on blocks not to mention this is a 1990. The previous owner (My Pastor) and I rented a trailer and had it delivered to my place.

The $1450.00 trailer has been a nightmare to get with the salesperson (vacations/flexible 40 hours/etc.). Its one of the larger outdoor store chains but they have been preparing for their busy season. I was fairly frustrated tonight and told one of the salespersons that I wanted to get this all squared away before the season gets kicked off and the reason I made contact with them over 6 weeks ago (getting frustrated). To be honest if it was not a chain store I would not have pursued it so long from them.

I am going to take a look at a bunch of new trailers tomorrow that are not from that chain store as a back up plan.

Its kind of interesting to see prices on these trailers. I have actually had the same trailer quoted to me and one was half the price of the other. We are talking down to manufacture and trailer. I am hoping that was some kind of mistake on the salesperson(s).

Thanks everyone for the help,
Chris

All,
Most likely it will be at the marina next year.

This year it will have a new deck, carpet, and umbrella put on and probably just dropped in once or twice.

Thanks
Chris
