my prop was stolen off my 2002 capri 175, why'll in storage. so now i dont know what size pitch or anything i need. i would like to get the original factory size if possible. does anybody know how i can find that? i tried the bayliner website and no luck. some say the size i need is 14.25 x 21 stock. but i also have been told other pitches and sizes. i already am getting good info about props in this forum. it is very helpful.
anyways, i picked up a decent spare prop at a yard sale cheap. has a few small scratches. the prop fits on the spline, but when i turn it, it hits the galvinized fin above.barely. im thinking that it was for a v6 or 8 cylinder. can i make this prop work, or will it not run right? i have a 3.0 liter 4cylinder mercruiser engine with alpha one outdrive. i plan on buying a new prop, but will this work? the size is 13 7/8 x 21 . i would like to have this size and the stock size, so i can experiment with the take-off and rpm's to see whats best for me. any information on what sizes i need or what to do with this galvinized fin, or if this prop will even work, would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Ayuh,... Either cut/ grind the torque tab, or get a smaller 1...
i would like to have this size and the stock size,
The "Stock" size is whatever size Works, Properly....

If this prop hits your tab the diameter/pitch/design is not correct for your I/O.
Here are ones that will fit. I would go for 31025 or for waterskiing the 31024

21-27' - (17-31 MPH) 16 R 14 3 AL 48-16438A40 031050
21-28' - (18-38 MPH) 15-1/4 R 15 3 AL 48-78116A40 031023
19-26' - (26-35 MPH) 16 R 16 3 AL 48-16440A40 031051
19-26' - (27-45 MPH) 14-1/2 R 17 3 AL 48-78118A40 031024
19-26' - (27-45 MPH) 15 R 17 3 AL 48-832828A45 031064
17-25' - (32-42 MPH) 15-1/2 R 18 3 AL 48-11324A45 031052
17-25' - (33-49 MPH) 14 R 19 3 AL 48-78120A40 031025
17-25' - (33-49 MPH) 14-1/2 R 19 3 AL 48-832830A45 031065
Up to 23' - (37-56 MPH) 13-3/4 R 21 3 AL 48-78122A40 031026
Up to 23' - (37-56 MPH) 14-1/4 R 21 3 AL 48-832832A45 031066
Up to 20' - (40-62 MPH) 14 R 23 3 AL 48-832834A45 031068
Up to 18' - (43-65 MPH) 13-3/8 R 25 3 AL 48-78126A40 031067

Incorrect - there are several different tabs for just this reason.

DO NOT cut the tab, you do not have power steering, so you need the tab.
Get an offset one.

Correct there is a special tab (822777), for very high rake props, but that is for only very few situations.

14.25 x 19 or 14.25 x 21 is what you need.

Smiles...There really is no std prop from a mfg, to many variables such a elavation and how a engine runs ...One boat at sea level will need a differnt prop than one running @ 4000 ft...But your ideal is sound, make a run with your current prop and post the results...generally speaking the 19 to 21 is correct..But props are expensive so taking a few minutes to do a run is appropriate so you can tinker effectivley...That is half the fun for some of us...;)

Might want to check your tach to see if its correct...Boat tachs arew not as uniform as car tachs.. One thing that does puzzle me you say you bought a alum prop that hits your tab??? That would indicate a high rake alum prop...Can you posat a pic...Or determine the mfg

Re: looking for a solution for my 2002 bayliner capri 175

i now have two props that fell into my lap. my aluminum prop does not hit the fin .but it came off a 185 thompson with a 3.0. merc. rides o.k. but dont know if thats the one i need. its the stainless steel prop that i think came from a bigger boat and/or bigger engine that hits the fin. when i say i want the stock size. i mean i want the size that came with it when new. but ill try to post the sizes and pictures of the two props i have. i dont think i could see anything on the alumiinum one. i just want to make sure i dont mess anything up. or get lack of power out of it. thanks

So don't even try to run with the SS that hits the tab. Put the other one on and answer the following questions.
1) Proposed use (overall performance, top speed, water sports, etc)
2) Current prop diameter and pitch (required).
3 Wide open throttle RPM and speed with an average load

look for pitch and dia on the side of the hub or for p/n's with the prop off the engine on the end of the hub.

Doesn't matter what boat they came off of. What is the pitch/dia of each of your "new" props?

Re: looking for a solution for my 2002 bayliner capri 175

hello, the two prop sizes(numbers) i have are, quicksilver 1 15x17p, # 1912p17 and other is 13 7/8x21, i have on the quicksilver now and it runs pretty good and fast, but i have no gauges yet to see the rpms, or speed. this one seems a little bigger then the original one. it came off a 185 thompson cutlass with 3.0 mercruiser. boat is only a foot longer then my capri 175, but much bigger. as for the other prop, i havent tried it yet, but just picked up a new anode, galvinized fin, so the prop wont hit when rotating. im gonna try it out later today and see how it goes.

Re: looking for a solution for my 2002 bayliner capri 175

I've tried 3 props on my 175. The 14.25 x 21 BlackMax that came with it, a 14.25 x 19 Hustler and a 14.25 x 21 Hustler.

I MUCH prefer the Hustler props over the BlackMax. Not sure what the physical differences are, but the Hustler holeshots better and seems to pull a few more MPH at the same RPM vs. the BlackMax, which is great when trying to cover distance and save fuel. Prop blowout seems about the same.

I've pretty much decided the BlackMax will be a spare and the Hustlers will be my primary props. 21 for general cruising and the 19 for tubing days. 2 props for 2 purposed for $200.... made my happy!

DO NOT run that 21" prop until you have a working tach. That 4" change in pitch represent approx an 800rpm difference at WOT. The tach is the most essential tool needed when dialing in a prop.

o.k. thanks. the last thing i want to do is blow up the engine. so your saying my 17 prop has more top speed than my 21 prop? or more torque? im still trying to figure out the pitch differances. kind of like sprockets on a motorcycle.

Think of the propekker like the front sprocket then. Adding inches would be the same as adding teeth. Reducing "torque" applied to the wheel/water. Acceleration slows, but cruising rpm drops(for a given speed) and top speed can increase, IF you have enough power to push it. Reducing pitch does the exact opposite. Acceleration increases, rpms for a given speed increase, and depending on the amount of reduction, you risk over-reving because you have more power than drag.

Reason I am saying, you should avoid the 21 for now is risk engine damage due to lugging. Yes it is possible to over-rev, but that can be controlled with your throttle hand - lugging can't.

That tach needs to be at the very TOP of your repair list.
