I bought a 12' tinny and a 4.5hp blue band Merc. . I wanted the 4.5 for hunting with a freighter canoe. Huge overkill. For the tinny I found a couple of seized 7.5hp blue band Mercs . Between the two and some parts I ended up a decent little motor. I can get it up on plane if I lean forward. My Yellow Lab/ Golden Retriever loves standing on the small deck.

But we live near the Fraser River and I would like to do some salmon fishing on the river. I gather 7.5 isn't enough for the river. The tinny is a Harborcraft and rated for up to 15hp. Almost as good as a Mirocraft.. I lucked out there.

Weight is important , I'm an old phart. I use a boatloader .4 strokers are for trailered boats. I'm not too brand loyal.

Looking for suggestions for a good used 15HP. What older 15's have good reputation? THX

I don't know what the newer motors weigh but my old 15hp evinrude has to weigh around 50lbs. Fuel + tank extra.

Sorry

I'm not looking to buy one here, rather just a discussion of brands and models. Like avoid '73 Merc 7.5s , they used the Phase Maker ignition for only one year. Guess how I learned this.

Phasemaker ignition was used on the 7.5/9.8 motors from 1968-73. The 74-76 9.9/15 omc motors do not have great ignitions. 77 and newer motors are good. Any of the 6/7.5/8 hp omc motors are an excellent choice. Later model 7.5/9.8 hp are really good motors.

15 hp Johnson/evinrudes 2 strokes will weigh between 70# and 86# depending on year, and long or short shaft.

yamaha are 83-86#

Mercs, 70-80#, but have a weaker gearcase.
