Does anyone know where I can find a vintage inboard transmission? I don’t want to violate the iboats rules for solicitation of a buy sell but I think this is a bit different.

My dad is finishing up a restoration on a mahogany triple cockpit boat and the tyranny is missing the historical record calls for a:

E-95915M
12 bolt
OD is approx 13”
1:1 drive

Should bolt up to a Chrysler straight 8 cyl

If anyone has an idea where to look for this I would really appreciate it! This project is on hold till we find a tyranny.

Mac

Can you show us a picture of the boat/ motor?
We would like to see.

That sounds like a hard find. Somebody here might be able to point you in the right direction however.

I think this rig is from 1940's. I haven't been involved in this project but I'll see if I can dig up some photos.
Mac

Re: Looking for a Vintage Tranny

I'm spewing from my brain here and this info was stashed there a long time ago, so don't consider it encycolpedic! But here's what I know...

Chrysler they built two 6's. The smaller one was the Chrysler Ace (70, 92 or 95 hp depending on the year and source of information) and the larger was the Chrysler Crown (120 - 135 HP depending on the year and source of information). Both were popular choices for wooden inboard boats of that era with the Crown being the "powerful" choice.

They also built the "Royal" which was indeed a straight 8 (141 hp)

Pic:
http://www.vintagemarine.com/playtime_04.jpg

I've seen several Aces, but have never run one. I know of a few that were in commercial boats and their owners liked them, but a trade up to a Crown was pretty common (and easy).

I ran a Crown in two commercial fishboats on the west coast. Great engines!

The Crown is still around in surprising volume so I'd be surprised if it's a huge chore to find a gear for one. I'd also be surprised if they used three different gears (Ace/Crown/Royal). Since the Royal only reports 6 additional HP on top of a Crown, chances are a gear from a Crown may work?

I believe the gears were all Borg-Warner which means that they were also used behind a myriad of other marine engines making them easy to source/find.

Here's a link for more info/parts:
http://www.marineparts.com/mpf/mpf272.aspx

And for a pair of Royals (with gears):
http://www.forengines.com/parts.html

Hope some of this helps. Good luck!

Nikko
