I currently have a 150 force on a 20 foot bayliner trophy and I need to replace it . I Wanted to replace it with a older outboard that easy to work on with out all the injection and computers on it and I can get parts for it . Is it true that older omc are HP rated at the prop ? if So would a older 140 johnson be equal to my 150 force ? any suggestions , Thanks for the input JB

140 would be perfect...BUT...I think that Force on a Bayliner might be a 25 inch long shaft, and that could be problem...

a 140 johnny or rude would be perfect, to solve that 25" problem use a jack plate. measure your transom.

JB, I do not know if weight is a factor for you. Some of the J/E V4 motors of 115HP weigh 100# less than other motors of the same HP, cylinders but different years.

I was thinking of replacing my Merc 150HP tower, but couldn't afford the extra weight of the V-6 motors, so I looked at the J/E V-4s and found that weight descrepency. I never could link it to a reason.

The 140 Johnrude V4s did come in a 25-inch model...

The weight is a minor factor. The V-4 will go about 10mph slower that a V-6, but use less gas in exchange. Your 150 is probably very comparable to the 140 Johnnyrude. A V-6 anything would blow that 150 Force away.

If you want to save money, I understand. If you can afford it, and really want an outboard that will be so far above and beyond any old carb 2-stroke, get a fuel injected motor.

If you own interest in OPEC, I recommend the old 150 Evinrude XP. Nice engine, just thirsty.

Since I have no experience with any other large engine, it may not burn any more than any other 150 of it's day. But it sure burns more than my little 28 SPL! LOL

Merc v6 150s are easy to work on and parts are readily available.

The change in the way hp was measured happened around 1986/87. All manufactures had to rate at the prop instead of the powerhead after this. The reduction was about 5 hp on average.

I would look at a Mercury 150 EFI. A friend of mine has one on a 1900 pro v. Great motor.
