Looking for correct timing chain kit
I have a 23' deck boat with 5.0Gi pwtr engine. I would like to replace the timing chain and sprockets. Not all the parts are available at this time on this site. Can I just get the parts from a local auto part store? Am I correct that this engine is a '98 or '99 year model if not how do I tell?

Good Question. I do not have the power that I think the boat should have. Under a big load (8 to 10 adults) the rpm will not go over 3000rpm. Runs (and sounds) fine with with just a couple of people on it (rpm 4700) I am going through the list of of possible causes of low WOT.
1. Fuel good
2. Prop Correct
3. Fuel pick up almost 3 on suction... not sure about (or where) anti siphone valve
4. oil was 2 quarts high when I purchased 2 months ago
5. No Marine growth
6. gear ratio on outdrive correct
7. Throttle body air intake cleaned
8. had drive off and blew air through exhaust and it seems fine
9. All cylinder compression 170 to 180 after a head gasket change
10. Throttle body jets look good. Have repair kit in the mail will install this week
11. Fuel pump pressure and vacuum fine but have not checked when under a full load (8 or more adults)
12. boat loaded under max capacity of people.
13. Not over heating. Purchased boat without a thermostat not knowing and was told sensor was bad. When installing new thermostat I found pieces of the impeller stuck in housing. I also think this is why I had to replace head gasket after 15 hours after purchasing because the the impeller pieces blocking water flow in engine block/head.
15. linkage looks fine

New plugs, wires, distributor, Timing set to 8 degrees in service mode. no codes present

Ayuh,...... Yer overloaded in a huge boat for a tiny 305 motor,.....

Prop it for 5000 rpms at Wot, light load, 'n get outa the throttle at 4800 rpms normal drivin',......

Or get a bigger motor with alot more horsepower,.....

A 23 footer with that much load (8 people) I think your motor is giving all it has and maybe a tad more. A 5.0 is not much better then a good V6, it has HP but not much torque.

If you want to find out how well your doing, let us know the drive ratio (have WOT rpm with 8 people 3700) and prop pitch. Once we have that we are you can plug it into the prop slip calculator and see how its doing

I have a 23ft with a 454 and do well, but another guy with a 5.7 has a hard time getting up with same load. Mine does 60 MPH and his does only 48 MPH with same load. I'm turning a 21 pitch and he has a 19

Simply changing the chain and sprockets will do nothing to improve the performance. To check the chain remove the dist cap.
Rotate motor clockwise to the zero timing mark. Now rotate CCW and see how many degrees before the rotor moves.

Woops, also going to need to know the speed GPS or phone

18 pitch prop at 3700 rpm
10% slip should reach 35 mph
25% slip should reach 29 moh

18 pitch prop at 4700 rpm
10% slip should reach 45 mph
25% slip should reach 37 mph

this is what I got.
18 pitch 4200 rpm 1:60 ration 35mph

That is 21.8% slip, about like my cruiser

You could drop pitch some more for better hole shot, but may loose out with some top end. If you were not so veavy it would probably pick up some more speed
