I just got a nearly new 30hp and they threw in the LS kit. I need help. I took off the lower unit ok. I can understand the new shift rod. I see what could be a split ring under the bearing that is under the water pump. The spline has a threaded tip after the splines on the bottom.
how do I get it outa nd the new one in.
Will I have to do an engine oil change and remove the upper lower unit, or skeg,to get the water pipe put in? I see about six bolts plus the lower pivot mounts holding it to the lower motor cover.
I feel like it would be simpler to cut away and lower the transom from 20" to 15" on this old lowe 16 my buddy gave me?
any ideas?

Thanks

If you can get a manual for your motor, it may help with what does & doesn't need to be done to get the extension kit to fit.

A taller transom will allow for many more motor choices for you & any subsequent buyer....

The motor is a tohatsu mfs30a 3ro sn:038933xd
does this mean non-fuel injected?

Thanks

By "nearly new", you mean at least 10 years old. Yes, the 30A has 3 carbs; and is not EFI.

The power head has to come off, and the base comes off the powerhead to change the water pipe. Also, the LU will need to come apart to install the longer drive shaft. Yes, all oils will end up being drained. Several gaskets will need to be replaced, and on a motor of that age, we would probably install a new LU seal kit and a wp kit.

This is a fairly major job, usually done by a service center rather than DYI. But... It can be done in your home shop. Start by getting a Factory service manual from any dealer (including me), and studying the diagrams. Then decide whether you will want to tackle the job yourself.

Hey Paul,

The label on the engine says 2005. it was only used to start a trial on a waterloged boston whaler. About 20 minutes.
Can you tell me what additional parts, like under the powerhead gasket etc, I will be needing?
I'll be obtaining a shop manual also.

Thanks

What bits do you have already? You will need:

Water tube (and a new seal for the end of it)
Shift rod
Driveshaft

You will also need gaskets at the top (both sides of the motor "base" or "adapter plate"). If warranted, you may want a new wp kit, and a new lu seal kit.

And a new intermediate motor leg and about three hours of knowledgeable assistance.

Oh. Yeah. Duh. You do indeed need the longer exhaust housing. Forgot that. Sorry.

Hi,

Unbelievable new problem.
I sent the lower unit to a mechanic and the long shaft, shift rod were installed. Shifts great, Water pump installed...Shaft tops out with 1/2 " to go before lower unit mates to exhaust riser. the shift linkage appears to have the same distance to go before lining up. correct part number for shaft ( common to many years) shift rod makes it shift.
Is there a skeg spacer that I need. I am mystified.

If I ever get this together should I replace the stock galvanized lower unit bolts with Stainless?
Salt water use only.

Thanks

You need "the feel" to align the shaft. Yes, stainless is good.

Re: looking for guidance installing a long shaft kit on a 30 hp 4 stroke

Hi Paul,
Thanks.
i have gotten the shaft in the crank several times(dozens?) I keep hoping it will fit.the starter rope causes the shaft to turn... it is just .5" from mating up. I got the local best mechanic to verify. the removed shaft works great as a depth guage ,it goes in the length of the splines.I have two photos showing where the exhaust riser ended. Marked faintly in pencil.
View attachment 184466The exploded diagrams I have looked at show no skeg spacer.
This must mean no tohatsu spacer.View attachment 184467
What do you think.

I think that the false premise in the beginning is the problem...There is no long shaft kit. The leg has to be changed out.
