hello all,
i have always dreamed of building a small(14-18ft) hydrofoil or speed boat. when i was about 14 yrs. old, my father and i built a striper canoe (no, that doesn't have anything to do with being naked. it's 3/8" x 3/4" strips of wood laminated on both sides with fiberglass :) )

even then i had aspirations of someday building a powerboat. it was a wonderful experience building a boat with my father, but paddling around on a lake is not my idea of a good time.

i'm not suicidal, and i don't want to build a monster. something capable of achieving a safe 50mph would be more than enough. maybe a transome mount outboard or a small inboard. i have a lot of woodworking experience and feel confident that i can build a solid craft if i had the right plans. also, i don't want to spend a lot on the mechanichs (steering, trim tabs, electronics, etc.)

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

Re: looking for high quality boat plans

Hi bsrigley,

There are several sites that have plans available. I drooled over the Glen-L site for several weeks, looked at a few others, then was pointed in the direction of Renn Tolman's Alaskan Skiffs.

I went to google.com, and did a search for "boat building plans", and came up with all sorts of site that are more than happty to sell you books/plans.

My money just went to Renn Tolman, for his Skiff plans, and hopefully after tax-day, we'll have a little something left to start construction.

Try to find someone in your geographic area who's building as well. If you're not familiar with using the epoxies or fiberglass, sometimes it helps to see how others have done it.

G'Luck!
Rex S.

bsrigley
50MPH is pretty fast on the water. You sure don't want to skimp on steering, trim tabs and things like that. ;)

Re: looking for high quality boat plans

Thank you hooty and purple dragon for the info. i have been to many websites and have found an overwealming number of sites that cater to the home boat builder. i still haven't found all the info i am looking for as i am still intrigued by the idea of building a skin-over cedar or other wood strip design. maybe a hydrafoil or tunnel hull. this type of boat building is very beautiful, but i don't know if it is practical for a perfomance hull.

Mike F...thank you also for your reply. i certianly agree with you. what i really meant was that i don't want to spend a lot of $$ on these items. i want to find a proven and safe hull design that doesn't require a lot of acessories, but also a setup that i can assemble mostly from fiberglass laminated wood and some basic welding. i just don't want to have to buy a lot of expensive factory parts.

thanks again all,
better get back to my research :)

bsrigley,

Just a thought

You had mentioned a relitively small, inexpensive I/B or or O/B motor.

To push a heavy 18 foot wood and glass boat to 50 MPH your going to need about 125 or 150 HP motor or more depending on final design and weight. Not Cheap!

Motor, controls, wiring and fuel delivery are the areas you should spend the most(and will wether you want or not). :(

I hope you keep us informed through the process, it's very interesting. I think a lot of us have had that thought at one time or another, I think it's great. ;)

Sounds like great fun I wish you all the best. :)

Just a thought, 2 cents worth.
