Does anyone know where I can get the locking bar for a tilt trim on a 1984 Force 85 HP. I am attaching a picture I took from another post because that is the only one I have seen.Boat%2000073[2].jpg

Re: Looking for lock for Tilt Trim

i had a pair on my boat but changed over to the aftermarket model called "piece of 2x4 wood". That way i could leave the block in place until my boat was in water. Then when i tilted engine up the wood would float and i simply scooped it up with fish net.

But, that aside, i see them all the time on ebay for around $10. Probably cost more to ship it than buy.

You went for the smaller model. :p I'm using a 2 X 6, since my tilt/trim leaks. I know it is silly, but I have a bracer bar for towing, but when I get ready to launch, I back up almost to the water, remove that bar, raise the engine completely and block it with my after market model. Load it into the water, raise the engine slightly( I have a tilt/trim switch ON the motor itself as well - which makes it handy ) and grab the wood from the back. Easy enough.

Thanks for the input. The block of wood sounds like a good idea. I just installed the tilt trim from another motor and that piece was missing. I don't trust the hydraulics to keep it up for trailering. Right now I put the lock (slotted piece of flat metal) from the original setup I had but it looks like it might catch when fully tilted and I am lowering the motor.

If your tilt fails, that bent bar will do nothing. A good shot and it will either bend or tear out the bolt. It was never designed for trailering.

The trailering bar is quite expensive new--more than 100 bucks. They made at least two different versions; the one you show is the smaller all bent 1/2 inch rod one. BUT you can make one from a short length of 1 inch square steel tubing and some 1/2 inch round bar.

Send me a private message with your e mail address and next week I will send you a photo of mine. Can't do it here because my camera will not download onto my old dinosaur of a computer. Windows 98 from 1998--could be worse, it could be windows 95.

it isn't a matter of trust. You should not trailer the boat without bracing the engine up. At full tilt angle the pressure is 700-1000PSI for 85HP and up. The pump bypass valve is set at 900-1400PSI depending upon year & model.

If you trailer your boat without a bracket then everytime you hit a pothole you are running the risk of popping open the bypass valve and dragging your lower unit (and prop) on the road.
