My boat currently has a pair of cheap back to back seats, which are rotting away to almost nothing. So first I was thinking about just getting a replacement pair of cheapies, which hopefully would last another 20 years like my current ones. But theeeeeeeen I was thinking maybe I should get some nice seats instead. Bust I'm having trouble finding reviews. The ones I linked to above, does anyone have experience with those seats? They're width and depth is good, the backs are kind of high. The price ain't all that bad either. Is there maybe a not-quite-so-high-back type of seat that is similar to this?

Re: Attwood Centric High-Back Contour Seats

I've been browsing boat seats for hours and I found this seat I like even more. It's cheaper, a little shorter, looks like it has more padding. Looks better suited for my little boat. Of course they're not in stock! Nothing I want is EVER in stock! GRRRR

Dont forget you will have to add the cost of a pedestal and mounting hardware if you go with that type. It is pretty common though to ditch the back to backs and go with pedestal seats like you are looking at.

If I put one of those in my boat, my ankles would be hitting the top of my windsheild... But I did also pick out (4) nice 6" swiveling pedestals too. With the sale, the grand total is $600. Not a bad deal for four seats. Problem is, I want to make sure I'm getting a good seat that I like. It's kind of hard to tell from one small picture and a few lines of description. I'm hoping I'll get lucky and some people on this forum will have these exact seats, and can tell me they are great. Or that they suck.

You planning on going with 4? going to put them back to back or one in front of the other?

Yeah back to back, in place of the current back to backs. But they'll be swivel-able. Hopefully that comes in handy, and doesn't end up just making it that much harder to hang on in rough seas...

I bought those seats to pedestal mount in my 17' Rinkerbuilt. Outstanding quality, and very comfortable. I can see myself spending hours in that seat & not feeling the least bit uncomfortable - which is unusual for me. I'm 6'3", with about 6' of that in my legs. Finding a comfortable seat is always a challenge for me.

Can't show you them installed because they won't go in until spring, though.

Good luck on your search.

On the second seat i linked to, the white & red one, one of it's features is this: "Less swivel". What does that mean exactly?

Re: Looking For New Seats

OK so in addition to seeking more info about the seats I picked out (the white and red ones), I'm also seeking more info about the bases I picked out:

http://www.iboats.com/x/dm/view_id.375743

They're kind of expensive. But they look kind of cheap (function wise, cosmetically they look great). They call themselves swivel bases, but how does the swivel work? It LOOKS like you have to climb underneath, manually unscrew that handle, which lets the seat rotate totally freely, then you climb under and screw it back in. Is that really how they work? I don't really consider that swivel, I consider that simple adjustability. If that's how these work, I think I'm better off just getting some fixed bases for less money. When I think swivel, I think something that's spring loaded, so you can push yourself sideways, then let the seat return to it's normal position. Or if not spring loaded, at least something that has "sticky spots" so as you spin it freely, it will stiffen up at certain angles, like every 45? automatically.

I could get these:
7" Base
and these:
Locking Swivel with Handle

That would be cheaper and looks like it would operate better. Down side is they don't look nearly as nice. They would be about 2" higher overall. My boat has low sides so the lower the better. And I like the 6 screw, 9" base of the Wise base, vs the smaller 4 screw base of the cheap black one. I feel like the black one is much more likely to tear the screws through my floor especially in choppy seas. It's about $100 cheaper to go with the two piece plain black mount and swivel pieces.

These are what I've been looking at for my boat:

http://www.iboats.com/Adjustable-He...5120028--**********.574525703--view_id.375736

The 6" pedestals you listed above are awfully short ... which is OK if you have short legs, I guess. Mine are far too long to use a pedestal like that one. But ... they might work as a stern mount in my boat.

One of my intentions prior to mounting the pedestals is to build up the flooring where they will be mounted. A separate dias for each pedestal, sealed from the flooring so they can be replaced separately, if need be.

Re: Looking For New Seats

I know the 6" is short, but my boat currently has 5" bases on back to back seats. If I put 18" pedestals in my boat, the *** of the seats would be up above the side of the boat. Its like a car, your legs don't go down, they go forward. So you can relax. :D

Re: Looking For New Seats

I have a seat like the red and white your looking at but its all blue, it is very comfy. I have two different pedestals one is cheap and is held to the floor with four screws, the other is like that fancy one with about eight screws. They both ended up pulling out of the floor, yeah the floor isn't that good of shape so beware. I overcame that problem by building a false floor and fastening the pedestals with bolts and big washers underneath and that has worked out well. Not a fancy boat but great for fishing.

Re: Looking For New Seats

Hmmm interesting. I guess I'll go with the cheaper, swivel seats.
As far as installation, say, I got a 12" x 12" x 2" piece of wood, could I just screw the bases into that, and use the adhesive to glue the whole thing right to the existing floor? My floors not rotted buuuut, I don't think it's 100% either.

Like mine not 100%. I only have 2 seats so I built a base the width of the boat and about 3' long. I used 3/4" ply and 1"x1" for a frame, it just floats on the existing floor but I could screw that down too.

Re: Looking For New Seats

So I just ordered the white and red seat, the basic 7" black pedestal and the adjustable swivel thing. 4 of each. With about 5 minutes to spare in the labor day sale :-D I suspect I might end up returning the swivel units and just mounting the seats fixed, I'll have to see how much space I really have once I get the new seats. Yippee!

Re: Looking For New Seats

OK I got all my new seats and pedestals and swivels today! I think I'm going to return the swivels, they don't line up straight, so unless you purposely install the pedestals crooked, your seat will always be about 5? twisted off center. But we'll see. The bigger issue is the pedestals. Seen here...

It has a warning on it, saying do not use when traveling over 5 MPH. . . WTF is THAT about?!?!? My boat goes a fair bit faster than THAT! Am I missing something here?

Used same swivel in a jon boat I had. Same 5mph warning. Boat did all of 17mph and I never had an issue :) . If you can through bolt the base to deck it would be better.
