Mechanic says my '78 mercruiser needs new distrubutor and camshaft. Says it may be difficult finding a camshaft for this mercruiser 140. Question is should I scrap the boat and/or is it even worth it to try and repair? Also any suggestions on where to look for parts?

Re: Looking for opinions

You're not giving much info but if it's the GM 140 the cam is still available new from a couple of sources and you can also get the distributors on ebay.

Re: Looking for opinions

The Mercruiser 120 and 140 (closely related engines) are probably the most common engines on the water. Easy to find cams and distributors, new or used. Sounds like you may want to change mechnics ........

Have you tried looking here? I think the top link has about every Mercruiser cam made.

Be aware, however, GM changed the diameter of the dist shaft on later 3.0L; new ones are smaller diameter and shank below gear won't be supported by bushing in block properly. Also 120/140 cams will physically interchange. 'nutcase
