Go to your local Johnson or Evinrude dealer and ask if the tools are available. If not, ask to see theirs, so that you know what they are if you want to try to make your own.

Also, sometimes these tools show up on eBay.

Hi joe
Did you try ordering the bushing punch from your OMC dealer? You may end up having to make a punch. It's just a long rod with a sholder cut on one end. For seal removal use a screw or slide hammer type puller or a long rod with a short flat 90 bent on one end and use as a driver. Do not pry the seals out. You run the risk of breaking the housing.

I do not think that that generic $10 tool set will punch an OMC shift bushing. You need a special tool. See your local J/E dealer.

Man 'O man, this is not too hard!! Order up the shift rod bushing and o-ring from your local OMC/Bomb dealer. Ask him when it's a good time to come down and have him take his tool, one swing of the hammer and it's out, one swing of the hammer and it's in, give the guy with the hammer a six pack of Heineken, give the service manager a six pack of Heineken!!After you give them the beer, they won't charge you anything!! There's a "stop", you cannot just "punch" through with any 'ol drift and length of rod!! Or you'll destroy the gearhousing!!! If you find/buy the tool, you'll never use it in another million years!! Why buy it?? They will always remember you as that "Heineken" guy,(and jump to help you) just don't try to give them Pabst at a later date!!

Order the tool, it is cheeper than 2 six pacs of bud. If you do much wrenching on anything you will end up using this tool more than you think.

Re: Looking for Special Tools

First and main thing I suggest is to obtain a factory shop manual. Each section describes what tools are needed for that area of the engine, it also lists the name and part number of each tool.

With that info you can then inquire at you local friendly dealer or even search eBay.

Careful study of the photos (in the shop manual) may give you an idea of how to use an existing tool that you may already own.
-ANT

Re: Looking for Special Tools

I give up. Have any of you seen this tool?? It's a specific sized shaft with two "predetermined" lips on it. For different size/years of engines. Each lip is just big enough to drive the bushing out and drives it in AND seats it inside the gear housing. If you drive it too far OR too hard, you'll go right through the housing, THEN you'll have to throw the whole gearcase away. I have the tool and the last time I had to use it was 8 months ago on a customer's motor and the time before that was probably a year prior to that. You will never justify buying the tool or the time trying to find one. OK, give the mechanic a six pack of BUD instead! You'll gain more by "mak'n friends" with you friendly mechanic than BUYING the tool. OMC stopp'd producing it many years ago!! If you're needing to buy tools for you to work on your outboard, fine! But this is not the tool to buy!!!Invest in a good compression guage, insulated spark plug wire puller or timing light with built in tach. Spend your money on what will benifit you in the long run!!Nuf said by me!
