Looking for Tempest owners 20' merc 228

Hi guys I'm looking for anyone how owns one of these. I have a wire that is on my engine harness it is taped off and burnt. it is brown/white with a small eyelett connection.

It would go to a terminal block for connecting the trim sender wires on the drive. That wire is always in the wiring harness and if a trim gauge was not installed it's normally just taped over.
Did the "Burned" just happen or did you just notice it?
Is it burned or just melted a bit in one spot? Could be the engine overheated sometime in the past 20 some years and melted the insulation.
