I've been working on my 1989 Evinrude 48 SPL. After I got it home, I replaced the coil, power pack (Both needed it) and cleaned up the carbs. one of the carb floats was corroded and did not open. The engine has spark and backfires when I hit the ignition switch for the solenoid, but doesn't start. I found that the hose going from the choke solenoid to the top carb is broken off at the solenoid. So, I'm loking for that top plate, held on by 4 screws with 3 hose fittings protruding from it. I think when I get that in order it should start and run.
One question. I've heard when you start the engine cold you should hold the solenoid switch, on the ignition, in for 8 seconds and then release it and start the engine. I've also heard to hold the switch in the whole time you crank the engine til it starts. Any ideas which is correct?
Thanks so much for all the input you all have given me. I'd be lost without y'all.
