Looking for timing tips on 1979 9.8hp

I want to check my timing on my motor. The manual says it needs to be running between 4500 and 5500 rpms when the advance timing mark on the flywheel should line up with the mark on the starter housing. This brings me to three questions, Where is the timing mark on the starter housing? Since I don't have a test tank, and I can't put a timing light on it zipping across the lake. Will I be able to get the engine to run in gear at the proper rpms with the boat tied down securely to the trailer at the boat ramp? Does any one have any other tips on how to check the timing?

Thanks,
Denis

Dennis,

Just get on the lake, open it up, abandon the controls and fix the engine. OK, I'm just kidding. Go get you a barrel and fill it with water. It's a nice cheap tank to do your test in. Outside of that small tip, I can't help you on your timing problem. Is yours tiller or remotely controlled? Also, is it pull start or electric. I assume electric because it's talking about starter marks.
