any idea on the cost of paiting the hull, cause my plan was to keep it in a slip during the months of may to november. (salt water)

Nice boat that looks to have been well maintained. Excels were a little bit lower end and I think that price is at least a grand too high.

You're going to have to check around locally. You'll need a barrier coat and a couple coats of anti-fouling. The dealer can probably help you out there and have it done before you pick it up.

Looks like a nice starter boat, tho you haven't given any info on how you intend to use it. You should have it checked out by an independent surveyor or mechanic before you buy, and make sure you sea trial it.

TAKE A SAFE BOATING CLASS !!

Good luck!

Re: Looking into my first boat '94 Excel sl20

I'm trying to figure out how the value of this boat so I can get a fair price. It's priced at $5,995 right now but when I look up the NADA value it shows $3,700 (when I add in the bimini top, porta potti, etc.).

When I called the broker she stated they don't use NADA but instead ABOS. Does anybody have any familiarity with the ABOS Marine blue book? Could it really be $2,200 more then what NADA says the average retail value is?

Obviously I feel I should add a few bucks on when considering the new manifold and carburetor and assuming its in pristine condition. So would something around $4,500 seem like a fair price?

It has been up for sale since Fall of '09.

I have owned that exact boat for 10 years now and I have been happy with it. The boat is built in Minnesota by Wellcraft and was branded as Excel. I put this in the mid range for quality, fit and finish and have felt the styling was a bit ahead of its time.

The hull design cuts nicely through choppy water and it is easy to handle. The VP-SX 4.3L is quite economical with acceptable performance. It puts out a nice wakeboard wake (if you are into that), but is a bit big for slalom skiing. I prefer a tournament ski boat for that. Trailer recovery is a snap.

Make sure the wood floor and stringers are still solid. My boat is all original with no signs of dry rot. And the gelcoat has held up very well.

The asking price is not out of line for this area, but it is area specific. Around here this type of boat is very popular with young families because of the high gunwales and sport cuddy design.
