Looking to replace kicker

I have a 16' Malibu. I am wanting to replace the kicker on it. The kicker I have now is a 1988 Johnson 9.9 Short leg. My problem is that the prop keeps coming out of the water, plus, I would like some thing where I can lock the throttle and steer from the front (using my recently purchased EZ-steer system)
My question is, how big of motor would I need?
I was told that a 5hp Long leg would work, but, I'm not sure. For some reason, the owner of the store would not let me take the 5hp out for the weekend to try it
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Brian

How fast you want to go? A 5hp would be minimum but if only for trolling at 2mph then it will do fine. Go with a long shaft so the prop stays in the water so as to not risk burning the water pump impellor.

Kickers are generally used for trolling.. if that is your purpose, consider a "trolling plate" install on your main engine.. I've got one, it works very well, can be removed easily for non fishing days. if you insist on a kicker, like airshot said, get a long shaft.. 5hp will push you along fine

Yes, its main purpose is for trolling. Generally troll between 2 - 4 mph.
I don't like to use the main motor as it does not like to run at that low of an rpm.
And yes, definitely looking for a long leg.
Thanks for your help.

The Long shaft motor will stay in the water more than the Short one does.

The 5 hp will move you at 79% of the speed of the 10. (Power is proportional to the cube of the speed.)
If you do not tend to run the 10hp above 80% Throttle, the 5 will likely be fine.

What more needs to be answered??? :D

That sums it up pretty good UncleWillie. Now, I just have to figure out how a 5hp will move me 79% of a 10hp

Well, went out today to "look" at kickers. Came home with a "gently used" 9.9
Planning on taking it out tomorrow to see how it runs.
