Gang,
Looking to swap my bad for good. Bad powerhead is a 2000 Johnson 225. Good is a 1993-94 Johnson 225. Old motor is a red plug...new one is...well new plug.

Question:
I am told the bolt up to the mid section is no prob but are these blocks the same? Will my 2000 electrical system bolt onto the old block? Are the castings the same?

Thanks
PS: Dont have model #s...sorry.

I think that as long as they are both 90 degree motors you should be ok..they make a harness adapter that will connect your new harness to the red plug.

Take your harness, carbs, all peripherals off the 2000 and bolt them right up to the older block. Works just fine.

Re: Looper 225 Powerhead swap: Compatability

I did a similar swap with a 1996 powerhead to a 1992. I'm sure that There will be some differences. Nothing too crazy, but need to be addressed. You will need to get rid of the thermostat Bypass valves and existing thermostats. Replace them with thermostats and covers from a 1989 70hp. Another problem is the Tell tale. The newer model uses a molded grommet that taps into What I believe is called the exhaust adapter. Dead center aft, where the 2 exhaust relief ports are. The older block ( In my case 1992) Had a tell tale tapped into the top port side of the water jacket just under the powerpack. This did 2 things for that year of crankcase: It gave you an indication of cooling system operation, and (most importantly) Bled the air out of the top of the crankcase. The newer Crankcases dealt with air in the crankcase by use of a valve that replaced the tell tale port. If you plug the tell tale port on the older powerhead and try to use the newer style tell tale instead, you will eventually cook something. Rectifier, or top pistons due to lack of cooling water in the upper part of the crankcase. It is a good idea to keep the older style tell tale fitting. It wont kill you to have 2 tell tales, but your water pressure may suffer if you use anything more than 3/32 hose for the tell tale. Monitor the starboard cylinder head temp closely if your water pressure is affected. The thermostat is higher on that side and can run dry if the pressure is too low at idle. If this is your case, you can pull off that rubber exhaust grommet and plug the pisser from the inside with something.
Something else to consider: The 2000 carbs are jetted for a finger ported crankcase. That older crankcase I believe is not finger ported. I dont know how much of a difference it will make for you, but it made a difference in my case. Make sure your powerhead to adapter mating surface is clean and free of debris. Small pieces of scraped off gasket sometimes fall into the adapter. These pieces can become lodged in cooling passages restricting water flow. This was my experience in my swap some may be relevant to you. Jason

THANKS GANG! I am going to pick it up as the price is right. I will tear it down and go from there. Between the 2 motors I should be able to put a good one together :)

Jayrock,

I bailed on the 93 block. It turned out to be a 89.

I am buying a 1996 200 Looper. It should match up better with my 2000 225 Looper. I think its a red plug motor but I plan on bringing my harness and electrics over. Any issues with 96 to 00 water passages?

They should be the same as far as I know. Make sure that the water deflectors are installed and seated properly. Also there was a mandated cooling mod that was supposed to be done to the blocks. Check to see if it was done.

96 has the new Deutsch connectors. They stopped using the "big red plug" in 1995. Your harness from your 2000 will fit.

Thanks guys...that cooling mod was the little red plug in one of the passages when you remove the head? Once I get the 96 block apart I should know more.

More than the "little red plug". Those are the factory water deflectors. There is drilling, about 8 holes, and plugging with neoprene rod, and then capping with pipe plugs in specific areas. I know exactly how it is done, and have done it in my garage. It is not a machine shop operation, but it takes a bit of money to set up the jigs, and buy stuff you don't have.

Re: Looper 225 Powerhead swap: Compatability

Well I will get into it in the next month. The new (older) donor motor is a :
1996 J200TXEDR

My motor on the boat is a:
2000 J225VXSSS

So I am hoping to re0build the block from the 1996 and then mount all of my 2000 electrical parts and harness as well as my 225 carbs and throtlebody.

Right now it looks like it should work. I wont know if the cooling plugs are in the 96 till I pop the heads....should know tommorow! PUMPED! Got a great donor!

It will all just bolt right on. Good luck.
