Shelby..... Hopefully your warning horn system is operational. With the key on, ground out the connectors back at the engine.... heat sensors (tan wires) on each cyl head, tan wire at the vacuum switch which is attached to the VRO pump bracket, and of course the tan wire at the VRO electrical plug connector.

The horn should energize each time one of those wires is grounded. If not, find out why.

The main thing that comes to mind that would duplicate the sound of a fan belt slipping (on a outboard) would be having the top main bearing start to seize (not good).

It could also be a seizing of a bearing within the lower unit that is being transmitted up the driveshaft to the powerhead area. I've seen this take place but it's not common.

If the horn sounds momentarily when you turn the key on, you can check the VRO warning system with the engine running simply by clamping the oil line shut near the engine. If the VRO waring system is operating properly, the warning horn should start to beep every other second within a minutes time.
