loose spark plug cause overheat alarm?

hi everyone, i have a 1985 60hp evinrude elcod model. i had it out for its first sea trial on my wee 14' speedboat, and got overheat alarm, and struggled back to the ramp. luckily i didnt even take it out of the harbour!
got it home and found the plugs were loose!
could this have caused the overheat?
tell tale is shooting out water good and strong.

Probably not. Sounds more like a stuck thermostat to me. Pull the t'stat and put it in a pan of water on the stove. Measure the temp as it gets hot and see if and at what temp it opens.
