Looseness on Alpha1 outdrive

Ok I did get an answer in another post but maybe this needs to be discussed....

I have some play in the outdrive....side to side swing.
I am told this is the steering link square to square in the gimbal housing....
Whats the deal with this.....can it be serviced with the engine in the boat?
I did see something about a access plug kit where you drill out and tap plugs in bell housing so you can R&R this connecting lever....
Anyone done this procedure before?

Bond-o I guess my question was to get an opinion from someone that has serviced it a few times and what the norm is/was.....
Of course I am going to go look at it but unfortunately the boat is not in my yard to just jump right out there....
Don't know who pi$$ed in your Cheerios this morning but don't take it out on me for asking peoples opinions and of their findings!

What's the chances the aluminum gimbal ring is going to wear out that stainless steel pin?

it really doesn't matter what wore out on others boat, you need to know what is wrong with YOUR gimbal ring and vertical shaft.

Thank you Don That puts it in a better light.....your right doesn't really matter what others have found mine is mine....I would have to say that in most cases seeing it's a SS pin against an aluminum housing the pin will surely win out in a hardness contest.. Because I have never taken one apart I was unsure of all the parts involved....and what they were made of. Only sure way of knowing is disassemble and inspect.

I did mine a few years ago and found the slop to be in the steering arm to pin connection.Replaced both but not gimbal ring. I was able to figure this out ahead of time, cant remember the details exactly but seem to recall having wifey move drive back and forth while I looked at various locations with a flashlight etc.Havent got one in front of me but Im pretty sure you can see enough of each potential slop point to figure it out in advance,know what youre in for. I drilled the holes in transom housing,worked ok,Probably just as easy to remove engine.

Just an update.... didn't need a ring or pin just clean up the siezed cinch bolts and retorque them to 55ft lbs. tight as new. What are the chances of that!
