Hello, I have a 1979 35 Johnson outboard model# 35EL79A. It started out where I would occasionally lose my prime. motor would die, I would pump it up and it would start and run fine. It has slowly escalated to the point where I have to basically keep pumping it as im going or it dies. I tried taking the gas cap off the tank and same thing. Could it be a fuel pump issue?

Could be fuel pump, or sucking air from a loose hose. You can check the pump by pulling the line from the carb, Turn it over a few times and see if gas is coming out of the hose from the fuel pump.If that looks good check hose connections. Also could be primer bulb check valve.

well if I pump it up the primer bulb stays hard until I start it so im thinking prolly not primer bulb check valve. Good idea on pulling the hose off the carb though.

Check the connection at the tank also.Seems like it useing the gas you give it but not getting it on its own.If that motor can pull air it will.Be sure the seal between the engine and fuel pump is sealed.I have put a small o ring there to make it seal.

I checked the connection at the tank and to be honest with you I can't really tell if it is sucking in air. Its not leakin fuel or anything and the o ring appears to be ok.
