When I bought my boat, it came with a SI-TEX LORAN C RECEIVER model EZ-7 Is this system still useable? or is it obsolete? Are they hard to learn? Any information would be helpful.

Re: Loran C Receiver

Loran was mainly a nav guide for air planes and they too have all changed to gps. I have a loran C in my boat and in the planes I flew and I liked it. It wasn't hard to learn as long at the laron will tranlate its numbers into gps numbers for you due to the new charts. Mine took a 8' antenna on the boat and it got in the way ALOT so I got a garmin GPS 128 for $100 and never looked back.

Been seeing both sides of this. Can't believe that the Govt responsible for Long RAnge Navigation would give up this valuable nav aid for a cell phone. :% Don't think they have by reading the responses.

I studied it in tech school, back in late '59 (AN/APN-70) which had 10,000 (seemed like) vacuum tubes and we had to know which one was bad, by observing the display, to pass the course.....don't know how I did that.

Have been out on a charter fishing boat and LORAN put us right on top of a 100 yard diameter reef, 20 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico.

Very impressive.

Loran is not as accurate as GPS if given a Latitude/Longitude or TDs. However, it is very repeatable. The previous poster's charter fishing boat operator had obviously been to the spot before to be able to get to it so accurately.

Since the governement turned off SA, GPS is the way to go.

Well with all the information you guys gave me, and the thread that Reel Poor gave me. I guess it would be a good idea to invest in a GPS, and retire the Loran. Thanks everyone.
